Big Gamble: Gifting Lottery to Anyone Under 18

Looking to squeeze onto the nice list this year? We gotchu! You already know that lottery games make great gifts for almost everyone… Neighbor? Yessir. Favorite barista? You betcha. How ‘bout the kids? How ‘bout no.

Adults can enjoy the lottery and still remember to set limits for their play, a skill kids haven’t quite gotten a handle on yet. The earlier a person’s exposure to gambling occurs (especially if that happens in childhood), the more likely they are to develop a gambling problem later in life.

Research shows that many young people say their first gambling experience occurs around 9-11 years of age and around 27% of high school kids in North Carolina report having gambled for money during the past year.

So what’re you gonna do about it? Easy. Keep lottery tickets away from kids under age 18, including tickets that are already scratched.
